Dictionary and reading

Dictionary and reading

Move from finding a word to understanding it in a complete expression.

A dictionary helps identify a form and its meaning. Connected reading shows how that form is used. The portal links to dictionary, verbs, proverbs, reading, and books; choose the resource that answers your current question rather than treating every text as a definition.

Look up a form carefully

Start with the exact spelling from the passage. Read the whole result, including its explanation language and any example. A short translated label may describe one sense rather than every possible use of the Kifuliiru form.

If you do not find the result you expected, check the copied text and whether you are looking for a word or a longer expression. Retain the full phrase when asking for help. A missing result can be a coverage gap; it does not establish that the expression is invalid.

Compare a word and a phrase

The existing counting-nouns reference gives umuundu muguma as “one person.” A reader needs to distinguish the noun from the phrase containing its quantity. Copying the meaning of the entire phrase as the meaning of the noun alone loses that distinction.

Use that example as a reading method: identify the whole meaning first, then ask what each part contributes. Do not invent a plural or a new sentence simply to complete a note.

Read a passage in stages

  1. Read once for the main idea.
  2. Identify the expression that blocks understanding.
  3. Look for its explanation or ask about it with the sentence attached.
  4. Return to the full passage and check whether the explanation fits.

A proverb may also need a situation in which it is used. A literal translation and a meaning in use are different kinds of explanation. The culture guide covers that distinction.

Keep sources connected

For longer reading, explore the portal’s offered material and Imyazi. For community use, explore Lola. For structured explanations, use the language reference.

When reporting a dictionary or translation issue, include the page, original form, intended meaning, and proposed clarification. Tabula’s dictionary guide gives a fuller preparation method for contributions.
